HOW MUCH OF THE ANCIENT STORY DO WE REALLY KNOW?

Most of us grow up with a familiar collection of biblical books.

But the ancient world in which these writings emerged was much larger.

Across centuries, Jewish and Christian communities preserved, copied, discussed and interpreted a wide range of religious writings.

Some became central to particular traditions.

Others remained outside the biblical collections most people know today.

And that raises an interesting question.

What else was there?

1947

In 1947, Bedouin shepherds discovered ancient scrolls in a cave near Qumran, beside the Dead Sea.

What followed was a discovery that would become one of the most important archaeological finds connected to ancient biblical literature.

Over the following years, manuscripts and fragments were discovered in eleven caves around Qumran. They included biblical manuscripts as well as other Jewish writings.

The manuscripts date from roughly the third century BCE to the first century CE.

Think about that for a moment.

Words written thousands of years ago.

Hidden in caves.

Preserved through centuries.

And eventually brought back into the light.

BUT HERE'S WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING.

The Dead Sea Scrolls weren't simply copies of the Bible as we know it today.

The collection includes biblical manuscripts, commentaries, rules, apocalyptic writings and other ancient Jewish texts.

For example, the Genesis Apocryphon retells and expands parts of the Genesis story, including material concerning Noah. It was one of the scrolls discovered near Qumran.

And suddenly, the ancient biblical world starts looking much bigger.

Not necessarily different.

Just bigger.

THEN THERE IS ENOCH.

One of the most intriguing names in ancient Jewish literature is Enoch.

The Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish work associated with traditions surrounding Enoch, the figure described in Genesis as having "walked with God."

Its world is filled with visions, heavenly beings, judgment and questions about the unseen world.

It is not simply another retelling of Genesis.

It opens a window into how some ancient communities imagined the world beyond what could be seen.

And Enoch is only the beginning.

JUBILEES

ANOTHER STORY OF THE BEGINNING

The Book of Jubilees revisits the stories of Genesis and Exodus through a distinctive chronological framework.

The ancient world is familiar...

but the perspective is different.

This is what makes ancient religious literature so fascinating.

You can read the same stories you've heard before

and suddenly see them through another lens.

JASHER

A LOST BOOK. A FAMILIAR STORY.

The Book of Jashar is one of the most mysterious writings mentioned in the Bible.

It is referenced in Joshua.

Ancient Israel.

The stories are familiar...

but the details can be different.

The original Book of Jashar has been lost, leaving only brief references in the biblical text.

Later writings also appeared under the name Jasher, preserving stories and traditions connected to the ancient biblical world.

A lost book.

A name preserved in Scripture.

And stories that invite you to look again.

Ever Wondered About the Books Behind the Bible?

Meet Enoch, Jubilees & Jasher.
Three ancient texts. One complete hardcover. 472 pages.

Go beyond the familiar Scriptures. These are the writings Jude quoted by name, that Joshua and Second Samuel send you to by title, kept in the Ethiopian Orthodox canon while most Bibles quietly left them out.

The Book of Enoch: the visions Jude quotes by name.

The Book of Jubilees: Genesis and Exodus as the Ethiopian Church has read them for centuries.

The Book of Jasher: the lost chronicle named in Joshua and Second Samuel.

Don't just read the verses that point to these books. Put the actual texts in your hands and decide for yourself.

I ordered on a Tuesday night mostly to see if the free ebook was actually real. It was in my inbox in minutes, so I'd already finished Jubilees on my phone before the hardcover even left the warehouse.
